York
York is a walled city which is located in North Yorkshire. York is bordered by the Pennines, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds, making it one of the most beautiful cities in England. The city lies in the intersection of the A19 road from Doncaster to Tyneside, the A59 road from Liverpool to York, the A64 from Leeds to Scarborough, and the A1079 road from York to Hull. The M1 motorway is also only roughly 10 miles from the city centre.
The economy of York is hinged upon the service industries. These include tourism, IT, health, education, finance and public sector employment amongst others. York has one of the lowest unemployment statistics in the country. York's biggest employers include the City of York Council, Norwich Union Life and North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust.
York has always been a major railway site since the 1800s and many people in York are still employed by the railway industry today. The excellent railway links in York was one of the main factors in making York an economically successful city and aided the expansion of many companies situated within York, including the famous Rowntree's factory, now Nestle York, which has been based in the town since the 1800s.
Tourism is very important to the economy of York, bringing in much of the city's wealth and there are many attractions to keep them entertained such as the beautiful York Minster, Clifford's Tower and The Shambles, which are all excellent tourist attractions.
