Location
Southampton
Southampton is located on the south coast of England. It is the largest city in the county of Hampshire and is a major port in the UK. Southampton has excellent transport links with the rest of the UK. The M27 motorway links Southampton with the South West of the country, the M3 links up with London, the A43 links Southampton to the North and the M27 links it to the city centre.
One of the major employers in Southampton is the docks. The city is a major port for cruise ships and is also the largest freight port on the channel coast as well as being the fourth largest UK port by tonnage and is home to several container terminals.
The town has an industrial past and unlike many other parts of the country has managed to retain that. It is home to car and aircraft manufacture and electrical goods manufacturing, as well as retaining its more traditional industries including the docks, grain milling and tobacco processing.
Southampton also plays host to a large retail centre, The West Quay Shopping Centre, which is a major employer in the city. It is one of the largest retail centres in the country and is home to many major brands.
The city is home to the second longest medieval wall in Britain which attracts many visitors. It also houses a Tudor Museum and a Maritime Museum which are both worth checking out. The city also has ferry and boat rides throughout the year which are popular with locals and tourists alike.
