Middlesbrough is a town situated in the English county of North Yorkshire and has a population of around 140,000 people. The town can be accessed from all directions via the A1 (M), A19 and A66 motorways.

Often referred to as the 'industrial Hercules' of Britain, Middlesbrough was transformed from a collection of farmhouses in the early nineteenth century to a global force in the steel and metal construction industry after the discovery of large ironstone deposits in the Eston Hills. The town's industrial reach was so extensive that local steel producer, Dorman Long, which is still in business today as a subsidiary of another renowned bridge and engineering company, left its signature on the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia and the Bangkok Memorial Bridge in Thailand.

The Middlesbrough of today is no longer the industrial giant of yore. Indeed, industrial activity in the town is limited to fertiliser, chemical and iron/steel production on a significantly smaller scale. Nevertheless, this is not a sign of failure so much as an indication of Middlesbrough's renaissance. The industrial focus is now on renewable technologies and state-of-the-art computer animation training at the University of Teeside. The University is also an important resource for local companies, whom can avail of the high-tech facilities at the Institute of Digital Innovation building and graduate recruitment.

Middlesbrough has a thriving retail industry comprising of four shopping centres, which include major employers such as Top Shop and New Look. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants and nightclubs and important buildings such as the Riverside Stadium, home of Middlesbrough FC, which has a 35,100 seated capacity.
