Inverness
Inverness is considered to be the capital of the Highlands. Situated at the end of Loch Ness, it is a thriving town with excellent road and rail links. It is 162 north of Edinburgh and 573 from London. You can get a train from central London and stay on the same train all the way to Inverness. It is the hub of many major road networks, including; the A9, A82 and the A96. There is an airport on the outskirts of Inverness, providing air travel to several places in England and Ireland as well as the Channel Islands, Germany and other Scottish islands.
Famous not only for Loch Ness, but the Pringle Factory, The Firth of Forth and the Highland Games, Inverness is a popular destination for tourists.
During the Middle Ages, Inverness became a busy port with a major shipbuilding industry and exports of wool, fur and hide. Although the town continued to thrive as a port and market town, during the eighteenth century the whiskey distilling industry grew in importance with its access to pure spring water. Today, Inverness continues to be a busy port, mainly importing oil and timber. It is still an important destination for tourists and continues to be important in the distilling industry.
In 2000 Inverness was made a city. It has a large shopping centre (Eastgate), a theatre (Eden Court Theatre) and a kilt maker exhibition. However, one of the main attractions continues to be Loch Ness and the search for the ever illusive monster.
