A minibus is classified by the DVLA as a vehicle with between 9 and 16 seats. Minibuses are catagorised as a 'D1' vehicle by the DVLA. If you are a driver who passed their test prior to 01/01/1997 you will automatically have D1 entitlement on your licence.

If you passed your test after 01/01/2007 you can still drive a minibus but certain conditions apply:

You must be driving for social or non-commercial purposes.

The driver must be over 21 and have held their driving license for two years.

The driver must be providing the service on a voluntary basis

The maximum weight of the vehicle is 3.5 tonnes (or 4.5 tonnes if carrying specialist equipment for disabled passengers)

If the driver is over 70 years of age they must meet the health standards for a D1 vehicle.
